Main Contractor: Morgan Sindall Project Value: Circa £800k Services: Mechanical, Electrical DPL Group’s installation of Mechanical and Electrical works at Cedar Hall School In March 2023, DPL commenced a vital project to replace very old, temporary classrooms at Cedar Hall School, Benfleet. DPL was contracted by Morgan Sindall, on behalf of Essex County Council, for whom we have conducted several successful projects. Our reputation and existing relationships meant we were awarded the work, which would need strong attention to detail, adaptability, and communication. Cedar Hall School is a SEN school for children and young people with moderate learning difficulties and complex needs, and the project was crucial because the school was at risk of losing 60 places, if the temporary structures were not replaced. The temporary classrooms dated back to the 1970s and were no longer fit for purpose. The school needed to future-proof its provisions for the next generation of intake. The new block would include teaching classrooms, a library, offices, two changing rooms, areas for speech therapy and counselling, providing crucial resources for the school’s 176 pupils ranging from 4-16 years old. Challenges The turnaround times were stringent, and the school had to be prepared to greet its first group of students at the beginning of the 2023 academic year. The completion date was fixed, so we allocated extra resources and manpower to address the inflexibility and guarantee that the school would be ready to welcome students on schedule. Results DPL provided full turn key solution for M&E services at this inspirational, state-of-the-art NET zero building in operation facility. DPL group carried out; Full design of M&E services, Mains Distribution, Internal lighting & External lighting, Natural & mechanical ventilation, VRF systems, LTHW systems, Underfloor heating, Photovoltaics (Solar PV), Building management systems, Fire Alarm & Security Services, and Site wide below ground Gas & water services. The renewable energy systems installed will help the school hit their carbon emission targets as well as reduce their energy bills. “We are delighted with our new two-storey classroom block.” The ‘Braithwaite Block’, named after our long-standing Chair of Governors, is conveniently located near our outdoor learning facilities, including our chicken enclosure and forest school area, and boasts a canopy under which basic motor mechanics can be taught.
