Gull Wing Bridge Lowestoft

Developing a new world-leading and unique Gull Wing Bridge in Lowestoft
Main Contractor: Farrans
Project Value: £1.1 million
Services: Electrical, Mechanical

DPL Group’s installation of Mechanical and Electrical works at Gull Wing Bridge

In September 2024, DPL concluded work at a new world-leading project, the Gull Wing Bridge in Lowestoft. Following a tender in 2019, we were awarded the work in 2020, which would require collaboration, attention to detail, and strong communication, skills the team at DPL are proud to hold.

Contracted by Farrans on behalf of Suffolk County Council, The Gull Wing Bridge is an iconic high-profile structure designed and built to bring immediate and long-term benefits to the town, its businesses and residents.

Attracting new visitors by providing a third route into the town over Lake Lothing, alleviating the longstanding pressures of traffic congestion, this essential build is for everyone who wants to gain easy access to all Lowestoft has to offer.

Challenges

The project was one of many in our industry that suffered significant delays due to the restrictions imposed by COVID-19 and wasn’t commenced until June 2022.

Once work had started, there was additional pressure to complete the project before the Tour of Britain cycling race, which was due to travel over the bridge on September 8, during their preliminary ride-out ahead of the final stage between Lowestoft and Felixstowe.

Over 20 years in buildings infrastructure

Name any industry, sector or type of building and we’ll have provided design, build and maintenance services for its power, light, heating, cooling, data, safety and security systems. And with concerns rising around costs and environmental impact, you’ll benefit from our expertise in greater efficiency and renewable energy sources.

Result

The bridge was successfully completed and opened to the public at 9 am on 7th September 2024, in time for the Tour of Britain race, and saw it’s first pedestrian-only event where hundreds of people eagerly waited to be part of local history by being the first to walk over the multi-million-pound structure.

In addition to being beautifully designed and built, the Gull Wing Bridge will provide an opportunity for economic growth and investment for businesses in the local areas for decades to come.

Improving infrastructure and accessibility is key to the growth of local communities, which has been the foundation of us as Farrans, who have left a lasting legacy through their programme of social value and stakeholder engagement.

We at DPL are very proud to have worked alongside Farrans on the Gullwing Bridge project. This project has come with many challenges, but as a team we have worked together in delivering not only the M&E services but a vital transport link over Lake Lothing and Iconic new landmark for the town of Lowestoft. It has been a pleasure to work on such a complex, technical project and we thank all involved for their support throughout
